This morning I was listening to a podcast by Heavy D from Diesel Brothers and Ed Mylett (Podcast Link). I haven't ever listened to either of their podcasts before, but I follow Heavy D on social media and so I decided to click on it and listen to it while I worked out this morning. In a short sentence, it was fantastic! I enjoyed listening to them be real and talk about some of the things from their past and decisions they have made. One thing that really stood out to me, however, was a statement made by Ed Mylett. He said, " your mind gravitates towards what it is most familiar with". I thought this was so awesome. When you first read that statement it might not mean much, but the more thought you put into it, the more it makes sense and rings true!
What he meant by this is that you should live in your dreams. Whatever thing or opportunity you dream about, spend time thinking about it. What does it look like, what does it sound like, what will it feel like? The more we can attach emotion and feeling to something the more comfortable we get with that idea and that is how it becomes familiar. That is what begins to lead us towards achieving these goals and fulfilling these dreams. When we get there, and we make it, it feels comfortable. We are happy because our minds and bodies have often felt this as we have envisioned what it would be like.
An example he gave was that he and his wife would make an agreement that if he met certain sales goals that they would take a night and live it up. Stay at the Ritz-Carlton for $400 a night. She would get a spa, he would play golf, they would have a nice dinner for one night and really touch, or experience the things that they were dreaming about all of the time. By doing this they started to reprogram their minds and push themselves towards achieving their goals and living out their dreams. So what is it that you can do? How you touch your dreams? How can you start to become familiar and comfortable with those imaginations that you have? Start small!
Everyday you should be thinking about and visualizing what you want, who you want to become, and what you want to do. What will it feel like when you achieve it? How will you act when you are there? If we can put feeling and emotion behind it, it suddenly starts to push and guide us because we want to capture it and continue to feel it. Next step, touch it. Find a way to walk through a house that is similar to the one you want to own, test drive the car you want to have one day, watch a video of a place you want to vacation to, speak to a small group of people about how you want to change, go on a visit to a college that you want to attend. Whatever your dream is, find a way to experience a small part of it so that you can continue to become familiar with that feeling and let it drive you! You are never too young to chase your dreams!
I think this really stuck out to me because it's something I have done for quite some time without realizing it. So when I heard him verbalize it, it really clicked and made sense. For me, I always imaging what it's like to give a powerful speech, to win a big game, to have fun experiences with my family, and about impacting other people. I go through what I would say, I actually feel the emotion of what that moment would be like, and it really does push me to be more, to achieve more, and to go after all that I want in life.
